Day 4 (Aug 9, 2017 Wednesday)

We went back to Sabilal Muhtadin and finally, we met the Head Master who we found out is the father of Pia’s buddy, Awa. We met Mr. Wiyanto, S. Pd in his office and he was so glad to meet us. He told us that he can only speak little English. He is very accommodating to us and he even let us borrow their hijab to cover our hair.

Desy and Awa helped us to wear the hijab. We had so much fun doing it and immediately took pictures to see how we are looking. It’s my first time to wear hijab but it doesn’t feel hot or I don’t feel awkward, it just feels normal maybe be

cause most of the people in Banjarmasin wears it, it feels as if I am also a local of Banjarmasin and a Muslim. After meeting the headmaster, Mr. Muslim (that’s really his name) went inside the office. He will be our mentor and he teaches English to grade 4, 5 and 6. He explained to us since a few of the teachers can only speak English that is why we will be under his supervision.

After the orientation, we immediately headed to Mr. Muslim’s class in 5D. When we enter the room, all of the students were looking at us with questions on their faces. Mr. Muslim greeted them first in Bahasa, the greetings goes like this, “Selamat Pagi anak anak” (Good Morning Students) “Bagaimana Kabarnya Hari Ini” (How are you today?). He then introduced us in his class in English. After that, Pia and I introduced ourselves and had a question and answer with the students. As I observed this class, they are shy in asking questions because according to Mr. Muslim again only a few students from the school can speak English even him, he admitted that he still wants to improve conversing in English. He said that in Indonesia they started to English subject in grade 4 and it is only once a week for 1hr and 30 mins. Though most of them are shy, few were brave to ask questions or at times the teacher will interpret to them in Bahasa if they did not understand what we are saying. After the question and answer, we were seated at the back and the teacher starts his class by asking the class to open their book. The seating arrangement is in U shape which allows the teacher to easily see his students. 5D’s classroom is not small or big but just right for the student’s population. I noticed that the student’s art works were posted and displayed on the classroom’s wall that has 2 air conditioner and has 4 white light bulb that made the room well lighted.

The teacher started his class with an activity, a word hunt. He first read the instruction and explain to the students what they need to do. The students answered the activity in their book. He gave about 3-5 mins for the students to finish then he called a student to answer and find the word inside the box. While the students are answering the teacher is roaming around the class to check if they are doing the activity correctly. Next, the teacher asked the students to turn to the next page to sing a job chant. The books of the student have a QR code for the teacher to scan. All the songs and readings were recorded on that code so Mr. Muslim is using a speaker for the students to listen. There is one book for one student. A mind map is the next exercise. Mr. Muslim again asked the students to listen carefully to the audio because they have to complete the mind map. This is an exercise before the students answer their own mind map, it’s about themselves, the age, grade, addr, hobby, and dream job. Lastly, the children sing the Job Song then the teacher ended the class with a good-bye greeting. Right after the class the students as a sign of respect by doing the “mano” in Filipino.

After school Desy and Awa took us to the Duta Mall and rode their motorcycle. As per Desy, it’s the only mall here in Banjarmasin. We roam around the mall and ate in A&W. They were surprised when Pia and I dipped our fries on Sundae and we asked them to try it themselves but they really find it weird. After that we went back to our dormitory.

Day 5 (Aug 10, 2017, Thursday)

Today is the Sasirangan Day at school that is why the students wear Sasirangan clothes which is a traditional cloth only made in Banjarmasin. It’s colourful and cool to wear according to our buddies. Today, we just observed one class, 6B because the teachers will be having a meeting and the Head Master invited us to the meeting. The teacher does his routine. Greet the students in Bahasa then English then introduced us to the class. Pia and I, introduced ourselves and answered their questions. Their question like what’s our favourite food in Banjarmasin and in the Philippines, our favourite song, movies, but some asked how long are we staying in Banjarmasin, where are we staying, how we feel staying here and many more. When we entered the classroom, the students were excited to meet us said the Mr. Muslim. After the question and answer we seated beside the students.

The teacher started the lesson by listening to the audio “Had a Great Holiday”. I asked the teacher on why the topic is about holiday, he said that they just started the school year and connected the topic from the children’s vacation. The lesson was just about the holiday and they answered questions on their book. At times the teacher will ask the correct pronunciation of a word or correct spelling.

We tried some food at the school canteen and surprisingly we liked it.

The meeting room is very unusual. All the teachers are seated on a carpeted floor. The headmaster introduced us and we also introduced ourselves. It is such a humbling experience to meet the teacher in the school and we felt the warm welcome from them too.

After the meeting, we went to Duta Mall with the other exchange students from Thailand and played arcade games at their Amazone like Timezone or Worlds of Fun in the Philippines. We had fun and ate our dinner in the mall.

Day 6 (Aug 11, 2017 Friday)

We were told that Sabilal Muhtadin has their English Activity and the Headmaster is asking Awa if we can join in the morning. We were, of course, glad to join their activity, however, we were not informed that we will be in a large crowd of students, from grade 3, 4, 5, and 6. Though it was just a question and answer, as the headmaster is really pushing not only the students but also the teachers to practice conversing in English. After the activity Pia, Awa and I waited inside the teacher’s office. When the students saw us they got really excited and they like to enter the office but they are shy. I observed that in Sabilal, I’m not sure with other schools, students can freely enter the teacher’s office. Some of the students entered the room and talked to us.

The first class for today is 5A. The students were excited when they see us coming toward their class. The usual greeting of Mr. Muslim and us introducing ourselves and answering their questions. The lesson again was about the holiday same as the class for 5D. Listen to the audio before answering the activity on their book, singing Last Holiday Song.

In 6C, the last class for today, Mr. Muslim asked us to read and some part of the book. I read the conversation about the holiday and asked them to repeat after me.
