Day 1 (Aug 6, 2017 Sunday)
I was greeted by Desy Nurmanita, Kiki Amaliah and Nida who arrived early to pick me up at the airport. Nida bought her car and drove us all the way to my host university, Lambung Mangkurat around 20min-30min drive from the airport.
On our way, I saw signage the same in the Philippines. As I chat with them I found out that there are Filipino words similar in spelling and meaning in Bahasa like pintu (pinto in Filipino), kanan, and others. They are very friendly and accommodating so I ask some more questions as I got curious about their language. Surprisingly, they did not get irritated with all of my questions but gladly answers it.
We went straight to our dormitory where all the exchange students will be staying for a month. I met some students from Thailand. Each student exchange has their own buddy. My buddy is Desy who was part of the 2nd batch of SEA Teacher from Lambung Mangkurat University (UNLAM) and went to Thailand for her teaching practicum.
The dormitory is a two-storey building with several rooms that houses the other students from the University who also staying there. I met some students staying in the dormitory, others are shy but others are friendly. One student even played a traditional instrument called Panting and sing a song. Panting is a string traditional musical instrument in Indonesia. He even taught me a simple way to use it. After a small chat with them, I went to see my room. My roommate is Nantiya or Beer from Thailand but she arrived later that day. Our room has two beds with cabinet, water dispenser, study table, tv, air conditioner and a fan. Before dinner, Mr. Arief Budiman – coordinator from UNLAM went to our dormitory to personally welcome us to their school and give some reminders and information about the school where we will be deployed.
I unpacked my things then we had dinner in a nearby “karinderya” near the school. We ate “sate”, it’s a skewered grilled chicken meat and we also ate “nasi soup (in Bahasa, Nasi means rice). It has chicken strip, salted egg and rice. And for dessert we had pisang keju – fried banana topped with cheese and chocolate. I love pisang keju. Kiki said that the dinner is a treat from Mr. Arief.
Indonesian Rupiah has so many zeroes, I feel like a millionaire here. Haha!!
