Day 22 (Aug 27 Sunday)
Today we went to Lambung Mangkurat Museum. The name is the same with my host university but they are not owned by the school, our buddy said that they are different. In the museum, I saw artefacts that was used by the people in Banjarmasin. I also saw familiar crafts like the old house which is similar to our nipa hut, musical instruments that can be seen in the Philippine museum and others.
After visiting the museum, we went to Martapura Market where we bought souvenirs. I bought a knitted backpack, knitted purse and a polo shirt that has embroidery of the Muslim art. We spent much time in the market because we are looking for cheap and good find items. They said they sell diamonds in the market as the place has mining business and the place is rich with stones.
We went back to the dorm tired but I am satisfied with my purchases.
Day 23 (Aug 28 Monday)
Last week was our last day in Sabilal Muhtadin but I have to go back to the kindergarten and talk to the headmaster so I can take some more pictures but unfortunately, we arrived late because the headmaster is in a meeting and was advised to come back tomorrow.
We just go to money changer and went to another market near Sabilal and buy a present for Mr Muslim our mentor. They said that we should go back to school tomorrow to say good bye to the students and the other teachers.
Day 24 (Aug 29 Tuesday)
We finally met the headmaster. The headmaster can’t speak English so Desy and Awa translates what I need from the school. I asked to take another pictures of the children’s drawing and their curriculum. I took pictures but unfortunately the curriculum cannot be given to me due to privacy according to the headmaster.
Then we go back to the Elementary area of the school. The building is not near so we have to go by motorcycle. We only said our good bye to two classes of Mr. Muslim. Why it is so difficult to say good byes. I can see that the students were also sad. They gave us some chocopie and letters. Such sweet students.
It’s almost lunch so we decided to eat our lunch in the nearby restaurant. Desy suggested the Mie Ayam Bakso from another small restaurant. I ate and loved it! The first time I ate is good but this one is very delicious. This top my favourite food here in Banjarmasin.
Day 25 (Aug 30 Wednesday)
Today, we went to Bekantan conservatory center. One of UNLAM’s professor is actually the head of the project, Ms. Rizki Amaliah who is a Biology professor. There we saw the specie of monkey that can only be seen in Banjarmasin that has statue near Siring Market. At first look, one can immediately notice the nose of the monkey. They really have pointed nose like Pinocchio. The goal of center is to protect their species from extinction and invite students not only from science courses to be a part the project. Ms. Amalia also took a video of me and Pia saying to save Bekantan from extinction.
We didn’t take much time because Chayakorn’s professor from Thailand just visited UNLAM’s president and want to see the conservatory then will go to the airport.
Around 6 pm, Desy and Awa went to our dorm so we can practice for our cultural exchange tomorrow. We decided to sing a Bisayan song “Balay ni Mayang” and Ayo Ke Banjarmasin”. The four of us will perform tomorrow. Then for our dinner we went to our favourite restaurant and ate for the last time our favourite Nasi Goreng then we bought Terang Bulan for dessert we even get a free and special thin crust version of it. We went back to our dorm and feeling silly we put the chocolates on our teeth..haha!!This is one of my memorable time with them because we were laughing so hard.
Day 26 (Aug 31 Thursday)
Today is our farewell party in UNLAM. The mentors from different schools were invited as well as the supervisors who evaluated us they are teachers from UNLAM, the president and vice president of UNLAM and of course our buddies are there too. After the giving of certificate to the batch 4 participants, we presented our ppt presentation. Each has their own way of telling their own experiences with the program and their stay in UNLAM. I highlighted education, culture, experience and friendship that have a great significant for me as a future educator and as a person.
And the last part was the cultural exchange. Two from batch 3 presented a traditional dance from Banjarmasin. As I mentioned the four of us (me, Desy, Awa and Pia) sing Balay ni Mayang and Ayo ke Banjarmasin. Finally the Thai students also presented their traditional dance.
Day 27 (Sept 1 Friday)
It is a holiday today for the Muslim not just in Indonesia but in the whole world. Today is Idul Adha, everyone has their cows ready yesterday for them to kill. Our buddies said that it is the commemoration on how in their Koran, Ibrahim was about to kill his son Ishmael to offer to their god as a sacrifice but when he was about to kill his son Ishmael turned to a cow. The cow as they said will be their vehicle when they die for their soul to go to heaven. Before killing the cow they first pray then chop it and distribute to the families.
Pia, Desy, Kiki and I went to Desy’s house for lunch. After eating we decided to go to Duta Mall because there was no electricity since last night and every one of us is feeling hot. Desy’s parents drop us in the mall and we just stroll and ate at A&W. I tell them that their story about Ibrahaim and Ishmael has somehow similarities with the story of Abraham and his son Isaac. It was an exchange of what we belief for but in an informative manner not a debate as we respect each other’s beliefs.
We also visited Desy’s uncle and auntie. They are both nice and generous. They even gave me and Pia 100K Rupiah each. Desy said that it is their tradition. We were shy because we did not know at first.
When we got back to the dorm finally the electricity is back and all the Thai students are cooking Thai food for our last dinner together. Most of the food are spicy but delicious. Some of the buddies also gave a simple gift as remembrance from them.
