Day 18 (Aug 23 2017 Wednesday)
Today was my evaluation day. I chose class 5A as my student for my demo teaching. I taught them preposition and both used technology (projector and sound system) and visual aid. The classroom is quite small for the student’s population and it’s a bit difficult to move. I tried to remember the things that is on my lesson plan. After my demo teaching, Mr. Yusuf provided his feedback and presented the evaluation form. For my scores, I got one 2 (partially meets) for the discipline – it was during the assessment that I was not able to manage the class because they were standing up and a bit noisy and 2 got one 4 (consistently exceeds expectation) for knowledge of the subject matter and for communicative and the rest are 3 (consistently meets expectations). I felt that I could have given more and thought of strategies however all of these experience will be a lesson learned for me.
Day 19 (Aug 24 2017 Thursday)
This morning we finally meet the president of UNLAM. While waiting for the president, Mr. Arief Budiman had a little chat with us. He asked how we are doing with our stay in UNLAM and how we are with our school that where we were deployed. He also expressed his worries to me and Pia regarding wearing hijab. We explained to him that no one forced us to wear it and it is our way to show our respect to them but it does not mean that we are converting to their religion. He is not worried to us but to the people that will think otherwise.
The president was happy to see us and know that we are all in good condition, no health issues or conflict with our schools.
After the meeting, we went to Sabilal Muhtadin. It’s Pia’s evaluation day today. She did well as per my observation. Her major is SpEd but we both teaches in English She chose grade 6 and teach Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Day 20 (Aug 25 2017 Friday)
Our group was invited to watch the “Festival Budaya – Pasar Terapung 2017”. It is the anniversary the 67th Anniversary of Kalimantan. One of the biggest island of Indonesia near Borneo. We arrived to the place before 8 pm and there are many people who would like to watch for the show and to visit the booth of every city with their own products and food to promote to other cities and tourists like us. I was so amazed with their vibrant costumes and some even wear the traditional cloth that is the product of Bnajarmasin, the Sasirangan. On this event, it is evident how the people in this city patronize their own products, give importance to their language, dance, and tradition, in short this city is very on their culture. Even though most of the people doesn’t speak in English, even on their advertisement (written or not) are always in Bahasa. I rarely see advertisement in English including their food, all from the city’s cuisine. I’ve tried some of the food from the booths and one delicacy tasted our “suman” (rice cake), the only difference is the shape because its circle about the size of my palm and they eat it with salted egg.
I had fun learning the culture of this city.
Day 21 (Aug 26 2017)
We once again attended a wedding today. My buddy, Desy is the bridesmaid so she asked not just me and Pia but all of the exchange students to attend the wedding. We were told that the bride is a descendant of one of the king and queen of Banjarmasin and the couple decided to have their wedding the traditional way. Before the official ceremony, they had other rituals base on the traditional Banjarmasin wedding. It was a grand wedding at first look. With all the glamorous decorations, the venue is spacious that can accommodate around 300 guests, distinguished guests and over flowing food. Though we were not able to witness those rituals and the wedding ceremony I asked my buddy what else they did.
The wedding indeed speaks the status of the couple. A very peculiar wedding. Another chance for me to know the culture of Banjarmasin.
