SEA-Teacher Day 9-13 (Semangat!!)

Day 9 (Aug. 14, 2017 Monday)


Pia and I arrived in Sabilal Muhtadin early today because the service car that we are using is only available until 9:30 am but our class at 10:30 am. Good thing that Edwar still waited for us. Supposedly, we have a meeting with UNLAM’s president but it was moved to Aug 18, 2017, at 9:30 am according to Kiki who is the secretary of Mr. Arief Budiman and the facilitator of our batch.

Today, we observed class 5E. The teacher greeted the children in Bahasa as usual then Pia and I introduced ourselves to the class and answered questions of the students. The first activity is answering the mind map by listening to the audio then sing the job chant. After singing, the teacher asked the students to answer the mind map with their information.

Preposition is the next topic. There is an example on the student’s book, examples are: beside, opposite and next to. The teacher explained it by writing the word on the whiteboard and write the translation in Bahasa. The songs and even the book for grades 4,5, and 6 are just the same, even the song. They are really way behind in English compared to English subject the Philippines. Most probably, it is the reason why some students lose their attention to the lesson. I also observed that the songs are for like kindergarten, as well as the activities. The teacher and students just keep on reading the book.

After school, some of the students went to the teacher's office and I taught them how to count in Filipino. So cute!



Day 10 (Aug 15, 2017, Tuesday)

As usual, Edwar drove us to Sabilal Muhtadin. Today, we observed class 6E. Like the other classes the room has two air conditioner and with decorations for the upcoming Independence Day in Indonesia. The teacher’s routine is to greet the students in Bahasa , “Selamat Pagi anak anak” (Good Morning Students) “Bagaimana Kabarnya Hari Ini” (How are today?)

This is the first time that we will be observing this class so the usual question and answer portion. After that, Mr. Muslim asked the students to open their book to identify the picture then the teacher will translate it in Bahasa, like awesome, fun etc.

Then the students, listen to the audio about a conversation of two students. At times the teacher asks us for the pronunciation of some word like “awesome” and also ask in what tense is the sentence is. After listening to the audio the teacher will read then the students will repeat after him. After the activity, the teacher called students to use the word on their book in a sentence. The teacher called the students by their name.

Each activity has an audio for the conversation then the students will answer the question on their book.

After the activity, they sing the Last holiday Song.


Next class was 6D. After the routine of greeting, Pia and I introduced ourselves to the class then answer some questions from the students. Like the other classes, they are too shy to ask the question in English though there are few who can fluently converse in English.

The first activity in this class is to sing the Last Holiday Song from their book. First listen the audio, then after the children sing with audio then acapella. The teacher asked us how to pronounce “bear”. After the children answer the question on their book, they listen to the audio about the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The following activities are about the story. The teacher will explain the instruction to the students in English then translate in Bahasa.

The teacher will close the class with a closing greeting.



Day 11 (Aug 16, 2017 Wednesday)


It was a free day today as we do not have to go to school. Mr. Muslim is busy with the preparation of the activities for tomorrow’s Independence Day celebration as the chief coordinator of the program. Nothing really happened today. I just stayed in our dorm and do school works, sometimes will take a break to chat with my fellow student exchange. Pia and I, just ordered lunch at the school canteen by ourselves since we already know the price and on which stall to order. The canteen is just a 2-minute walk from our dormitory. Desy went to the dorm at 7 pm together with Kiki to visit us and they help us in order our dinner through Go Jek because we do not have an Indonesian phone because the delivery man will call to verify the address and the order.




Day 12 (Aug 17, 2017 Thursday)


Today is Indonesia’s Independence Day. We went to school this morning just to attend the flag ceremony at Sabilal Muhtadin. The teachers and the students are all wearing colorful Sasirangan uniform for this special event of their country. While we are in the car, UNLAM students are already getting ready for their own marching band and flag ceremony. During the flag ceremony at Sabilal, there was flag raising, Muslim’s prayer and the headmaster’s speech – all were in Bahasa. From time to time I will ask Desy what they are saying. After the ceremony we went back to our dormitory.



Day 13 (Aug 18, 2017 Friday)


We were back at Sabilal Muhtadin. Today we were invited to observe the class of Mr. As At in class 4C. The class were all excited when Pia and I entered the classroom. As usual, we introduced ourselves to them. The lesson that Mr. As At taught them is how to tell time. Sabilal, is using the British way to tell time for example, 10:45 – quarter past 10. Mr. As At mentioned that the class only know little English. As I observed the students are confused and having difficulties with the lesson because on their book the example is not the same as the teacher taught them. Most of them are not paying attention to the teacher either to talking to their seat mate or standing up.

After observing the class we had a break for 2 hrs. Desy, Awa, Pia and I had lunch and pass by a bookstore to buy materials for our upcoming teaching demo.

The last class of the today of Mr. Muslim is class 6C. The usual routine is the opening greeting then the teacher proceed with the lesson which is The Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The story was the springboard used for the lesson. They the lesson through the audio and after answer question on their book.
