Day 7 (Aug. 12, 2017 Saturday)
We didn’t have an activity in the morning till the afternoon so I did my laundry and school works. We ate dinner altogether then after we went to Bakantan Statue it’s the counterpart of Merlion here in Banjarmasin. Desy’s parents picked all of us using their minivan because the school van is not available. Like Desy, her parents are also very kind and accommodating to all of us. Bakantan is a monkey species that can only be found in Banjarmasin. We also rode on top of a “Kelotok” - a small boat in the river. The place is also called “Siring” which called for the floating market in the river that sells fruits, vegetables, and other products but our buddy also told us that they sell in the morning too. People usually go there at night for a visit and for taking pictures of the Statue. Aside from the floating, there are also sellers along the street. They sell cotton candy, balloons, key chains and much more. We had dinner at Taher Square, they have several food stalls and the place since its weekend is very crowded. After our dinner, we headed back to our dorm.
Day 8 (Aug. 13, 2017 Sunday)
We went again early in the morning at Siring place to see the floating market. It’s a busy and crowded Sunday morning. There are families, other locals and from other places of Banjarmasin visiting the place. Vendors sell different kinds of products. I was interested in the street food being sold only in Banjarmasin or Indonesia. While others are eating their breakfast, I went for a walk and take pictures of the place and the food. We also went to a small museum called Anno’s house – Anno is the name of the owner. The museum has traditional Muslim wedding clothes that are vibrant, intricate with designs that show the Muslim culture. On the second floor, they have a section to buy souvenirs, another part of the floor is a small cafeteria and reading area for children.
Desy and her parents are waiting for us to come back to the dormitory, as she invited me and Pia to attend two weddings, one in Banjarmasin and while the other one is in Banjarbaru – it is a city near Soekano Hatta Airport, an hour drive from Banjarmasin. Kiki also accompanied us to the wedding. Unfortunately, we were not able to witness the ceremony, we just ate and then go to a Mosque so they can pray. Surprisingly, we were allowed (non-Muslims) to enter their mosque. It is a big and spacious mosque inside and outside. We took some pictures then we went to a place called “Rainbow Village” because the streets and the houses we colourfully painted and decorated. It’s almost 5 pm when we arrived in the city proper, however, we went to Giant Ekstra for Desy’s family to buy their groceries and had dinner.
