Day 14 (Aug 19, 2017 Saturday)

The English Club of Lambung Mangkurat University is holding a 2 day English Camp and one of the committees who happened to be my buddy, Desy, told us a week ago that there are 4 participants from the exchange students to be the speaker to share our experience in Banjarmasin and to give a brief information about the difference of the education system here in Indonesia and the Philippines. She asked to be one of the speaker. I met few students from university that do not speak English or they are shy in conversing in English that is why I asked Desy that aside from being a speaker which was scheduled at night, I also want to help in their spelling bee since she is one of the committee. I am really curious on how college students here know about English so I became the “announcer” (as they call it) of the spelling bee of their competition.

There were about 100 plus college students who attended during the camp. The program went well and we had our certificates after the activity.

Day 15 (Aug 20, 2017 Sunday)

We left early morning on Sunday to take a trip around the other cities outside Banjarmasin. Awa’s father, Mr. Wayinto, the headmaster of the Elementary in Sabilal also accompanied us going to our trip and became our “driver” as Pia and I rode in their car. We first arrived on Taman Labirin Pelaihari – it’s a wide place where it has a lake, picnic area and the main attraction of the place is the man made garden maze. Next, we headed for lunch in a floating restaurant and lastly in Pantai Takisung Beach. All these places are in South Kalimantan.

Day 16 (Aug 21 2017)

If UNLAM’s car is not available but if Desy and Awa are both available they pick us up and use their motorcycle. In Indonesia, during their junior high school, students are being taught to ride a motorcycle so when they turned 17 they can have their license to drive. It is no wonder that the street is full of motorcycle which the means of transportation of most people specifically in Banjarmasin, if not, car or Go-Car. Like today, our buddies are not available so Awa has to order Go-Car for us going to Sabilal.

Since Mr. Muslim is handling grades 4, 5 and 6, Pia and I decided that I will practice teaching grade 5 and she will practice teaching on grade 6. This morning I taught grade 5A lesson 2 on their book about rooms at school. Then Pia taught grade 6A about Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Day 17 (Aug 22 2017)

Before going to school, we met our supervisor that will evaluate us. Mr. Yusuf, UNLAM’s lecturer. We tell him about when is our schedule for evaluation and what grade. He looks like strict and serious a person. Wooh! Butterflies starting to fly in my stomach!

Today, I visited the kindergarten class of Sabilal. I was accompanied by Awa as we first meet the headmaster to ask for permission to take photos of the children’s writings and drawings for my thesis. I was allowed to enter the class and take pictures of the activity. There are activities inside the classroom and some outside the classroom. The headmaster said that they have toddler, play group, class A and class B and the children are not force to write in class B (children in class B are 5 years old). In toddler and play group, children just go to school and play with the supervision of the teacher. They have educational toys and blocks and I even saw children tearing and cutting papers so they can develop their fine motor skills in prepapration for writing. I sit in on class B, the teacher said that the first part of the class, she will class them to write or draw but if they want to play first before writing, it’s ok or if they do not want to write then it’s ok too. The teacher is writing her observation base on what her students are doing and take picture of their works. Before the class ends, they made a circle and the teacher asks each of them on what they did then they will pray.
